Tony Spera was once a police officer by trade, he tells of how in 1979, one day he was ‘out on the job’ and he caught a glimpse of “Judy”, the beautiful daughter of Ed and Lorraine, whom would be later become his wife.
He details:
“I was in my patrol car and a station wagon drove by with a beautiful woman, she waved to me and smiled, and I waved back”
The ‘young and single’ Officer Spera thought he would follower her discreetly to see where she is going. He notes that “She pulled into this strip-mall, got out of her car and went into this dress store.” He further adds: “I found out later that is where she worked, I rolled down my window as she was heading into the store, and she quickly ran into the store.” (Laughs)
He continues…
“What I didn’t know at the time, is that she thought I was ‘Al’ another officer who work on the force in this area, who was off work that night. And at some point soon after, I talked to Al about her, and at some point we were formerly introduce.”
This was September 1979. After they dated for about a month, one night she asked him:
“Hey do you want to go see my parent lecture at the university of Connecticut tonight?“
And he said: ”What are they college professors, what are they?” (Judy’s last name differs from “Warren” she was previously married) She said no there the famous Psychic researchers “Ed and Lorraine Warren”
“And when she said that, I knew the name, I was into those topics of the “Supernatural” since way back when.
So I said sure I’ll go!”
So they went to UCON that night, and we met with Ed and Lorraine in the ‘green room’ before the lecture.
This was late in 1979 in October.
Thus, Tony begins his tenure with Ed & Lorraine Warren from then onward.
In 1980 he assisted the Warrens in his first high profile case that was portray in Gerald Brittle’s book “The Devil in Connecticut” (Also know as the Demon murder case, and the Brookfield demon case), where Tony’s photo credits made his mark in history in the paranormal.
His background in police work he cites as a help in the work:
“As a police officer you have to have an inquisitive mind.” He continues. ”A Police officer is one of the most skeptical people, and it applies the same with the work relating to the supernatural realm, you can’t go in
You have to know what to ask the people, and pay close attention to their responses. Are they telling you the truth, is it their imagination? Perhaps they are mentally or emotionally disturbed. Properly analyzing the answers and responses to questions like this, is a skill you would need to know going into the case.”
When Ed fell to illness Tony stepped up to the plate to help Lorraine with day-to-day operations of the New England Society for Psychic research. “A God’s send” as Lorraine Called him. And upon Ed’s death in August of 2006, it became clear who Ed’s successor was. But Lorraine will say she always knew Tony could fill his (Ed’s) shoes.
Many would have not know who A Tony Spera was if not for his appearance with Lorraine in A&E’s Reality TV series “Paranormal State”. He is not one who is comfortable in the spotlight, just as when he was a police officer, the daily task of the job.
Enjoy the interview!
